The 122S and the PV544 were Volvo's workhorses, and they were marketed that way.
Ads touted Volvo's ability to withstand Swedish roads (80% unpaved) and Swedish winters (temps of -30 degrees).
Volvo was definitely implying its cars could take whatever you could dish out.

The last Volvo 120 came off the line in 1968. This marked a departure in Volvo design from a round shape to sharp lines and corners.

There is no better testament to Volvo's toughness and reliability than this PV544, which Joginder and Jaswant Singh drove to victory in the 1965 East African Safari Rally.

The Singh brothers had rebuilt the car, which was crashed during training for the same race in 1964.
